all about essential oils
I first encountered essential oils when I was looking for natural solutions for my family's health. I’ve come to realize that not only do these little bottles pack a powerful punch, but that a single drop can do a world of good. Whether it’s eucalyptus rubbed on a chest for respiratory support, lavender and cedarwood on the feet to help soothe and unwind at bedtime, to a swipe of the blend Peace & Calming down the back of the neck to stop a two-year-old meltdown in its tracks. Essential oils have empowered me to take charge of my family’s well-being.
So what are essential oils and how do they work?
Essential oils are aromatic liquids extracted from plants usually by steam distillation or cold pressing. They are volatile, not in the sense that they will spontaneously ignite(!!) but because essential oil molecules are so extremely tiny, when you open a bottle they will disperse into the air as an aroma. Because they are so small, essential oil molecules can easily enter our body through the nose and lungs (aromatic application), the skin (topical application), and digestive tract (internal application). When applied topically as they are on a diffuser cuff, essential oils can penetrate the skin and travel throughout the entire body in minutes.
Plants have evolved unique bioconstituents over millennia to serve different purposes – maybe to attract a pollinator, to cleanse the plant of toxins, or to guard against bacteria or disease. Just as these constituents work for plants, they can also have a positive effect in our bodies, to bring us back to a state of wellness. Some of these constituents help with inflammation, balancing emotions and mental wellness. Some have been studied and found to inhibit bacteria growth and infection and help support the immune system.
What exactly is a diffuser cuff?
A diffuser cuff is a simple but stylish way to apply essential oils. Add a drop of oil on the inside of the cuff in the morning and those tiny molecules will travel throughout your body within minutes of putting it on. You will also smell the essential oil throughout the day. The heady floral aroma of my favorite blend, Joy, coming from my diffuser bracelet keeps my spirits lifted as I go about my day!
Which essential oils do I use?
I have tried many different brands of essential oils over the years and none have come close to the potency and therefore effectiveness of Young Living Essential Oils. Other brands will smell nice, but Young Living produces pure, therapeutic grade essential oils that can be used for medicinal purposes. The reason Young Living oils are different is because of their very strict, detailed method for producing the oils, which they grow on their own farms, distill in their own distilleries, bottle at their own plants, and quality test, test, and test all along the way. The result is only the pristine, most ‘un-messed-with’ plant essences containing the highest levels of bioconstituents of any oils on the market. Because they are so pure, they can be ingested and used safely with young children.
